Academic degrees, fields of study, awarding institutions, dates: •Ph.D. in Engineering Sciences, University of Porto 2006. •Curricular part of the Doctoral Program on Biomedical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto 1997. •Graduation in Aquatic Sciences, Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar, University of Porto 1987. Present positions and immediate past positions: •Post-Doctoral Researcher at INEB, since March 2006. •Ph.D. Researcher at INEB, Instituto de Biologia Molecular e Celular (IBMC), and Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), from November 1997 to March 2006. •Biologist in charge at the turbot hatchery and fishfarm Piscicultura do Rio Alto, A. Coelho & Castro Lda, from 1991 to 1995. Main areas of research: Development of surface tailored porous scaffolds, based on natural polymers like chitosan, to be used in stem-cell regenerative therapies. Surface modification of polymeric 3-D matrices with adhesive motifs and/or biological signaling molecules (to induce locally vascularization or the recruitment and phenotypic differentiation of progenitor cells), aiming at regenerating injured or diseased tissues. Publications: Since 2004, author of one Ph.D. thesis entitled Chitosan Matrices for Cell-based Bone Regenerative Therapies, one book, one book chapter, 8 publications in international refereed journals, and author of 15 communications in international scientific events.
